Dalbey Family History 

The Dalbey family roots trace back to 1664, when David Marple was born in Radnorshire, Wales. He married Jane, and their son Thomas Marple (b. 1685 – d. 1770) continued the line. Thomas’s daughter Tacy Marple (b. 1736, Montgomery County, PA) married Aaron Dalbey (b. 1764) in 1789 in Fredricks County, Virginia.

Day / Krauel Family:
Joellyn Brothers was born on June 26, 1948, to Margaret Belle (Richter) and Joseph Franklin Brothers. She graduated from Oakwood High School and earned a BSN from Southern Illinois University and an MS from Eastern Illinois University. Joellyn worked as a school nurse for Danville District #118.

She married Rodney Day on August 30, 1969. They later divorced. Joellyn and Rodney had two children:

Christopher Joseph Day (b. November 11, 1972), married Kim Reese (b. October 4, 1975) on August 5, 1995

Stacy Ranae Day (b. May 27, 1975), graduate of Danville Area Community College (DACC)

Dearing Family:

Grace Aline Monroe (b. April 1, 1900 – d. August 17, 1976) was the daughter of Thomas William and Laura Belle (Morris) Monroe.

On February 4, 1918, she married James E. Dearing (b. March 3, 1896), son of Samuel A. and Eunice (Prouty) Dearing of Fairmount, Illinois.

They had three children:

  • Harold Edward Dearing (b. November 16, 1918)

  • Norman Clair Dearing (b. January 12, 1921)

  • Dale Eugene Dearing (b. January 11, 1923)

Donahue

Rachel Fern (Monroe) Donahue was born on November 23, 1903, the daughter of Thomas William and Laura Belle (Morris) Monroe.

Her first marriage was to Glen Bridgeman, and they had one son, Claude, who tragically died in a track accident in Plymouth, Indiana on May 9, 1952.

Rachel later married William Donahue as her second husband. She passed away in June 1965 in Chicago, Illinois.

 


Downing

Leo Downing was born on August 8, 1929, in Armstrong, Illinois. He married Esther on September 27, 1959.

Esther was born on December 31, 1926, in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Leo attended French and Brown Grade Schools and graduated from Bismarck High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1954, stationed in Japan, where he worked at the Far East Printing Plant.

Esther attended Kingman, Indiana Grade and High School. She has been active in the Homemakers Extension Association, and with Leo, has participated in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, volunteer work at United Samaritans Hospital, and activities at the Oakwood Christian Church.

Leo is also involved with the Barbershoppers, the Korean War Veterans Association, and the American Legion.

Leo and Esther moved to Oakwood in 1959, where they reside at 7 Penz Drive. They have two children:

    Ernest Shelby Dukes was born on October 3, 1898, in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana, and passed away on June 30, 1965.
    Frieda Thompson Dukes was born in December 1897, in Hope, Vermilion County, Illinois, and died on August 6, 1960, in Danville. Frieda was a schoolteacher in northern Vermilion County, where she met Ernest.


    Cox Family Line

    Ross Cox (Mary Ruth’s father) was born June 5, 1906, and died January 15, 1970. He resigned as Mayor of Oakwood in 1962 when transferred by Standard Oil Company to East Alton, Illinois.
    Ross’s parents were Ben and Flossie (Baker) Cox.

    Genevieve (Chaffee) Cox, Mary’s mother, was born June 2, 1906, and passed away December 25, 1981. She attended college in Normal, Illinois, and taught in Pilot Township near Collison.

    Genevieve’s father, Dr. John A. Chaffee, M.D., opened his medical office in 1919 one block east of the Oakwood Water Tower, following his time in Muncie while Dr. Michael was serving in World War I.

      Roy Durbin married Nancy Grimm on September 5, 1965. Roy was drafted into the U.S. Army in December 1965 and served until October 1967. He was notably the first married man drafted from Vermilion County since the Korean War, inducted on December 29, 1965.

      Both Roy and Nancy graduated from Oakwood High School. Roy is employed by the Vermilion County Highway Department, and Nancy works at Lauhoff Grain Company in Danville.

      They have two sons:

      Thomas Edward Durbin was born on October 24, 1967, to Larry Edward Durbin (b. May 22, 1947) and Marilyn Sue (Doney) Durbin (b. July 3, 1949, d. March 21, 1989). Tom married Tawney Lynn Hand on March 17, 1990.

      Tawney was born December 8, 1967, the daughter of Sharon Lynn (Boger) (b. July 9, 1947) and Larry Lee Whitman (b. December 26, 1941).

      Dysert

       

      Marion Eugene Dysert was bom October 3, 1926, in Oakwood Township, on June 14, 1945, he married Luella Faye Miller bom August 2, 1927. Faye and Marion both graduated from Oakland City High School, Oakland City, Indiana.

      Marion farmed in the Oakwood area for 42 years of the 48 years the Dysert family has lived here. He served as Oakwood Township Supervisor for 30 years, was a Vermilion County Board member for 20 years, Chairman Vermilion County Board, Chairman of the County Board of Review, President Muncie Consolidated School Board, former trustee of the Oakwood Methodist Church, and has been a member of the church for 48 years. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the 1st Cavalry Division,
      Pacific Theatre. He is also a member of the Catlin Masonic Lodge, Danville Consistory, Elks Club #332, Vermilion County Farm Bureau, and Vermilion County Museum.

      Marion and Faye have two children: Teny Gene, bom February 26, 1949, and Alan Ray, born June 12,1951. Both are graduates of Oakwood High School and the University of Illinois. Terry married Mindy Stein and they have a son, Ethan MacKenzie, bom January 3, 1995. Terry is a nuclear engineer and owner of Maple Associates Consulting Company. Alan married Mary Elizabeth Dobbles and they have two sons, Cody Dylan, bom June 19, 1986, and Cooper Reese, born May 31, 1990. Alan acted in “All My Children” for six years as Sean Cudahy, and is a Screen Actors Guild Instructor, Songwriter (Notown Publishing Co.)

      Edward James Eaton was born on December 4, 1943. He attended school through 7th grade at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, then graduated 8th grade at Greenpark Jr. High in Fuchu, Japan. He completed his first three years of high school at Radford High in Oahu, Hawaii, and graduated from Palatine High School in Palatine, Illinois.

      On December 31, 1986, Ed married Marie Ellen Cramer, who was born June 26, 1950.

      William and Julia lived and farmed in the Lake Shore neighborhood all their lives. William loved roses and kept a rose garden with plants decades old. Both families were early Vermilion County pioneers.

      Fagaly Family

      William “Butch” Fagaly was born in 1887 in Worthington, Indiana. He earned the nickname “Butch” when he owned a meat market in St. Joseph, Illinois. He operated a grocery in Flat Rock, Illinois before moving to Oakwood around 1918.

      He was employed by W.D. Rogers and worked in a grocery in Fairmount, Illinois before opening his own grocery and meat market in Oakwood in 1922, which he ran until 1941. After retiring, he sold the store to C.J. Oakwood and his son Clarence Oakwood, who continued operations with Roy Fagaly retained as meat cutter.

      During WWII, ration books and tokens made storekeeping complex, with red and blue tokens required for rationed items like meat, sugar, and gasoline. These had to be deposited at the bank and tracked carefully with purchases.

      A fire that destroyed the Mason and Trent Lumber Yard also damaged the IOOF Hall, which housed the Oakwood grocery store. Augusta Newtson worked in the store during the Oakwood ownership. The Oakwoods operated the store for 42 months, selling it to Albert Seyfert, who later closed it.

      Mr. Fagaly became ill in 1974, spent 11 years in a nursing home, and passed away in 1985. He was a member of the Oakwood Christian Church and the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge.


      Fleming Family

      Ruby Mabry Fleming was born December 20, 1926, in Gifford, Illinois, to Charley and Ida (Lambert) Mabry. She attended Martin Grade School and Bondville Grade School, graduating from Champaign High School.

      She married William S. Fleming on August 11, 1951. William was born June 27, 1919, in Franzeysburg, Ohio, and passed away November 11, 1979.

      • Linda (Barns), b. May 26, 1952, Zanesville, OH

      Ruby moved to Oakwood in 1949, left, and returned in 1966. She resides on Seymour Street and is a member of the Oakwood Christian Church.


      Fletcher Family

      Frank, Homer, and Dave Fletcher ran the Middlefork Coal Company.
      Frank Fletcher married Allie Elizabeth Hobbs and had the following children:

      Fox Family

      Mont Fox was born in 1883 east of Oakwood.
      Nellie Davidson was born 1886, northeast of Oakwood. Married in 1904, they moved one mile south.

      Nellie’s father was a drummer boy in the Civil War, enlisting at 14. She lived to be 100 years and six months old; her mother lived to 102, and sister Mary also passed 100.
      Mont served at Oakwood Savings & Loan, then the State Bank of Oakwood, retiring in 1972.

      They had one daughter, Ruth.


      Fullmer Family

      John A. and Janet Fullmer moved to 106 E. Collett Street, Oakwood, on July 1, 1994, where John became minister at Oakwood United Methodist Church.

      John:

      • Born November 23

      • Educated at Moody Bible Institute, Dubuque Theological Seminary, and others

      • Former director of Child Evangelism Fellowship, pastor at Deland and Moline UMC

      Janet:

      • Born December 2, Decatur, IL

      • Worked in many fields including homemaking, bus driving, cashiering, and office management

      They were married August 9, and have six children:
      Susan, Maria, Matt, Sara, Philip, and John Mark, and six grandchildren:
      Andrea, Dominic, John Michael, Rachelle, Colton, and Mallory.
